Focus: Color Wheel, Color Theory, Relief Sculpture
Introductory Mini-Lesson
Students were introduced to the color wheel and basic color schemes to begin building a foundation of color theory before this project. After reviewing the color wheel in class, students colored their own color wheel, blending the intermediate colors using colored pencils.
Project Details
Drawing inspiration from Mrs. Nguyen’s Radial Symmetry project, students were introduced to the history and art of origami. After learning about the Japanese art, students were taught three basic folds. While students could do the project with just the three folds learned in class, students were encouraged to use online resources to learn more folds. Students really enjoyed getting to find new folds to learn. Some big hits included roses, butterflies, swans, and fortune tellers!
As a class, students were taught how to measure using a ruler to create equal spacing for their origami color wheels.
After the introduction to origami and preparing their papers, students were instructed to create at least three folds for each color (form), keeping in mind that they would want to balance their work. They could include black and white forms in their designs as well. Students tried out various arrangements before gluing down their final composition.
