Project Details

Students began this project by reviewing typical facial proportions. If students had already learned how to draw the face in prior art classes, they could complete the introductory assignment at their own pace. For students who had never drawn a portrait before, a step-by-step demonstration was given explaining the proportions of the face. Students were provided the Art of Education Facial Proportions resource if desired.

After reviewing/ learning about typical facial proportions, students were given the option to either transfer, grid, or free-hand their portrait. Students were allowed to do either a self-portrait or select another person for their project.

Students drew the basic outline of their portrait first. Then, using drawing pencils or colored pencil, students added details and value to their project. A demonstration was given for shading with drawing pencils and colored pencil.

After portraits were drawn, students used a teacher-provided interactive presentation to research three different portrait artists: Chuck Close, Kehinde Wiley, and Gustav Klimt. Students selected one artist to be the inspiration for their portrait background.

Students created a background for their project in the style of their selected artist. Students had choice in what material they used for their background.
