Elements/ Principles: Pattern, Proportion, Contrast & Emphasis, Color
Focus: Portraits, Tessellations
Project Details
Students were introduced to pattern and Tessellations. After creating their own tessellation puzzle piece, students traced their pattern across their background page. Students were required to select a color scheme for their background. They would later pick a contrasting color scheme for their portraits.
After their backgrounds were complete, students learned about proportions of the face. Students practiced by following a step-by-step demonstration of drawing typical facial features and proportions. (Resource: Art of Education Facial Proportions).
Students used a transfer method to draw the basic outline of their face, then drew in features and details by looking at their portrait. After getting the contour lines drawn, students painted their portraits.
To assemble, students cut out their portrait and glued it to their background. Students had the option to outline their portraits/ background lines with sharpies if they wanted.
