Project Details

Students were introduced to the project and asked to select a creature, real or fictional, for their project. Using a research guide, students learned about their creatures, their habitats, and other requested information.

Once students selected and researched their creatures, they created a to-scale sketch of their composition. During class, the principle of design balance was discussed and studied by looking at examples from traditional artwork. After their sketch was complete, students transferred their design to their final paper.

Students were given a choice of material to add color to their project. Most students used colored pencil, though many chose watercolor, marker, and oil pastel. Students were also encouraged to mix materials if desired.

Before moving onto the border, students were taught various ink shading techniques including hatching, cross hatching, stippling, and scribbling. Students used at least one ink technique to create a developed border.
