Art 1 – Line Compositions (2021)

Middle School | Art 1 (6-8 Grade)

Element/ Principle: Line, Color

Focus: Blending

Project Details

Since this project was such a hit last year (2020 Post), I used it again this year to introduce Art 1 students to the elements of art Line and Color. Students learned about Line, the most basic element, and studied how different traditional artists use line in their work. Students discussed various types of line (straight, wavy, diagonal, etc.) and properties of lines (thick, think, rough, etc.).

Students created a composition using lines. Students were required to use at least one of each of the following lines: straight, curvy, zig-zag, dashed, and a line with a loop. Students were allowed to add more lines, combine line types, and were encouraged to experiment with different line qualities. This year, students were also encouraged to create unique and narrative compositions as opposed to just non-objective art.

Students then learned how to use oil pastels and practiced blending colors together in their sketchbook. Since students had previously learned about color theory through the Origami Color Wheel project, they applied that using analogous colors would make their blending smoother.

Students finished the project by coloring in each section, blending colors and adding details and they desired.
