Middle School | Art 1 (6th Grade)
Element/ Principle: Form, Balance
Focus: Sculpture, Watercolor Techniques
Project Details
This project focused on the element of art Form and introduced students to sculpture in the round. Students were also introduced to the principle of design Balance through this project.
Step 1: Making Project Material
Students began by painting thin paper with watercolor to create a unique material for the project. They were given the option to use a color scheme when painting their paper since we had been talking about them throughout the semester. Students also explored various ways of painting with watercolors including mixing colors, blotting with paper and sponges, and adding other materials to change how the paint dries.
Step 2: Creating the Sculpture
Students were introduced to various paper sculpting techniques. A teacher demonstration was given to show students how to shape and sculpt with paper. Students were instructed to follow along and practice the various techniques.
After learning and practicing various paper sculpting methods, students created their sculptures to demonstrate the use of form. Students were told to create various forms and try out many compositions before gluing their final sculpture to ensure that sculptures were balanced.
