Art 1 – Texture Shapes

Middle School | Art 1 (6th Grade)

Elements/ Principles: Texture, Value, Space, Shape

Focus: Texture, Shading

Pre-Lesson

Before the main project, students were introduced to texture through an exploratory mini-lesson. Students were given the opportunity to create both actual and implied texture.

Project Details

The Texture Shapes project focused on the elements of art texture, value, space, and shape as well as introduced students to shading with a pencil.

To begin, students were tasked with drawing various shapes to fill their page. Shapes were required to overlap and fill the space fully. Students then used their new knowledge of implied texture to fill in their shapes with different textures. After adding texture, students shaded around their shapes to show space through value and layering. Students who finished their project early were given the option to add color to their textures.
