Art 1 – Abstract Color Collages

Middle School | Art 1 (6th Grade)

Element/ Principle: Color, Balance

Focus: Collage, Abstract Art

Project Details

Students were introduced to the Element of Art Color and the Color Wheel in a previous project (Origami Color Wheels). After learning about the basics of color, this project introduced students to the idea of Color Schemes. After learning about Abstract and Non-Representational Art, students created collages.

Step 1: Preparing the Paper

As a class, students were lead through dividing up a 12×18 paper. First, students divided the whole page into six equal squares. Then, students divided up each square into smaller sections.

To paint their papers, students chose a primary color for their top three sections. Students painted their next section with the complementary color of their top row. Finally, the last two boxes were painted with analogous colors to their top row.

Students used watercolors to paint their section. After learning about the Element of Art Value, students added layers of watercolor to create various tints and shades.

Step 2: Creating Collages

After their papers had dried, students cut up their paper along the lines we originally drew. This gave them many different shapes and sizes of shapes to use to create their collage. Students were instructed to test out various compositions before gluing down any of their peices.

Due to the nature of the 2020-2021 school year, some students completed this project in class, while students at home completed the same project using materials they had available.
