High School: Portraits Private Lessons

High School | 9th Grade

Focus: Portraits, Facial Proportions, Shading

As part of TWU’s Educator Preparation Program, I had the opportunity to conduct five private art lessons with a student. This was part of EDUC 5133 Assessment and Instruction. The purpose of the assignment was to work with a real student, write lesson plans, and practice assessing student work through formative and summative assignments.

Pre-Assessment

In the pre-assessment, I asked the student what she was interested in learning. The student had never been taught how to formally draw a portrait, though she really liked drawing people. In the pre-assessment, I had the student draw a portrait so that I could assess her starting skill level.

Pre-Assessment Plan + Observations

Private Lessons

After reviewing the student’s pre-assessment, I could plan out the future lessons. The student had a general understanding of how to draw the human face, but did not have some features placed or scaled correctly. I planned to review basic proportions with the student, then focus on drawing and shading individual features of the face.

Lesson 1: Proportions of the Face

Lesson 2: Eyes, Eyebrows, and Hair

Lesson 3: Nose & Mouth

Post-Assessment

For the post-assessment, I asked the student to take the information and skills we had practiced over the last three lessons and use them to create a portrait. I would be assessing her with a portrait checklist.
